WHEN THE HEAT WILL NOT BREAK: A WORD FOR A HOT AND RESTLESS SEASON

These days feel heavy.

The heat lingers longer than it should. The clouds gather as if they are ready to pour, yet they hold back. The air thickens. It presses on our skin, seeps into our homes, and even settles into our hearts. We wait for relief, but none comes. And something in us begins to feel the same—tense, restless, almost ready to burst, yet with nowhere to release.

It is not just the weather.

The world itself feels overheated. Conflicts erupt, pause, and then erupt again. Promises of peace come and go like passing clouds, offering hope for a moment, only to leave us wearier when they fail. It feels, at times, like the whole world is holding its breath… or losing it.

And in such a season, we quietly ask: How do we remain steady when everything around us feels like it is about to explode? When the external heat rises, our internal heat follows. Short tempers. Quick judgments. Quiet anxieties. A subtle loss of patience with people we love. A creeping irritability even in ministry.

This season warns me: the heart is not as calm as I thought it was.

When the weather presses in, it exposes what has been building within. Like humidity in the air, unseen but real, our inner life becomes saturated, until even small things feel overwhelming.

So I must be careful. Not every reaction I feel deserves to be expressed. Not every frustration should be released. The heat I feel is real, but it is also a test of the spirit within me. Proverbs reminds me, “He who rules his spirit is greater than he who takes a city” (16:32).

This is not the first time God’s people have lived through oppressive seasons. There were times when the land was dry, the skies silent, and the future uncertain. There were seasons of waiting, when prayers seemed unanswered, and relief delayed. Yet again and again, Scripture reminds us: God is never inactive in the waiting.

The clouds that do not break are not empty. The silence is not absence. The delay is not neglect. God is working in ways I cannot yet see. Sometimes, He allows the heat to linger, not to harm us, but to deepen us. To expose what needs healing. To draw us back into dependence. To teach us that we cannot control the climate of the world, but we can surrender the climate of our hearts.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

Stillness is not natural in such weather. But it is necessary. Do not let the temperature of the world dictate the temperature of my soul.

When the world grows hotter, our calling is not to match it, but to carry a different spirit. When anger rises around us, we are called to gentleness. When fear spreads, we are called to trust. This is not denial, this is discipleship!

We must resist the subtle pull to become like the very world we are sent to witness to. It is easy to absorb its anxiety, echo its outrage, and mirror its despair. But we belong to another Kingdom, one that is unshaken, unhurried, and unafraid.

So I guard my heart. Slow down my reactions. Deepen my prayers. Return to the Word, not for information, but for formation. Let Christ, not circumstance, shape my inner life.

This season will not last forever. The rain will come. The air will clear. The tension will break. But until it does, we are invited into something deeper, not just endurance, but perseverance rooted in trust.

“Those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.” (Isaiah 40:31)

Not escape the heat, but be renewed within it.

PS: I wrote this on April 17. The next day, the rain poured as I visited a young couple who had just welcomed their first baby.
