History Appointed by the Presbyterian Church of England, Rev JAB Cook arrived in 1881 to oversee missionary work among the Chinese in Singapore. In Nov 1881 Cook began ministering to the Chinese at Bukit Timah. This event was significant because it eventually led to the founding of the Chinese Christian Church; this was subsequently renamed the Glory Presbyterian Church, the third oldest Chinese-speaking congregation in the Presbyterian Synod. In 1947, Rev Yap Kok Hu was appointed as Hokkien pastor of Glory Church. His concern for souls was profound and many believers were added to the church. In the mid 1960s there was a swing towards English education. As a result of Rev Yap's foresight, in 1967 he initiated a committee to look into the possibility of starting an English service. The English Service was inaugurated in 1968. The attendance for the first service was 120 which included friends and visitors. Regular Sunday classes (from kindergarten to married adults) were started. Today there are 39 classes and 390 in attendance. In 1971 the Presbyterian Church in USA sent Rev William J Kirkman as a missionary to pastor the English service and he laboured faithfully for 5 years. During the tenure of his pastorship, membership grew and the church made much progress. After his departure, Mr Philip Chiang took over the preachership and pastored the English service till 1988. In 1976 youth bible classes were started and they are now a regular feature of the church. In 1980 the English Service with the blessings of the mother church became financially self-supporting. Glory Missionary Fund was launched to help Christian workers working locally and abroad. On 1st September 1980, a committee was formed to oversee the church extension and parsonage project. Construction was ready in Oct 1981 just in time for our centenary celebrations. In Jan 1981 an official prayer meeting was inaugurated. In 1987-88 Stephen Yew, Wong Chong Mun and Soon Ai Meng joined the pastoral team. The 0930 service was started in 1989. The English Service started a Boys' Brigade at Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary School in 1991. The Girls' Brigade (30th Coy) was launched in 1993. With the collaboration of Worldwide Evangelism for Christ, mission teams were sent to Sumatra from 1993-97 to reach out to the Rejang people and also to expose our members to mission involvement on a short-term basis. In 1995 Rev Soon initiated the building of an extension to the existing Educational Centre. The dedication service was held on 11 Jan 1997. The first 1130 service was held on 5 Jan 97. The average attendance is now fifty. In obedience to the Great Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ, Glory Presbyterian Church will also look beyond the shores of Singapore to spread the gospel of our Lord. We trust God for growth and look to Him for guidance and strength.
