EVIDENCES OF A BORN-AGAIN CHRISTIAN

EVIDENCES OF A BORN-AGAIN CHRISTIAN

Twice a year, you would have had the opportunity to read a collection of conversion testimonies written by those undergoing confirmation, baptism and transfer of membership. The transformation of those who become Christians from non-Christian backgrounds seems more clear-cut. Even those around them could testify to significant changes they noted in their lives after they became Christians. The perplexing question – “How can I know if I am born-again?” is raised by those who grew up in Christian families and are exposed to a Christian environment since young. Some of these have accepted Christ as their Saviour and Lord yet, are unable to pin-point a specific date in which they were truly born-again.

How can we know if we are a child of God? The Apostle John states that the life that one leads, his conduct and behaviour, rather than his verbal claims, reveals or is evidence whether one is or is not a child of God. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.” (1 John 1:6)

“Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother. (1 John 3:7-10)

Jesus says, “ Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:17-21).

As Christians, we do ‘good works” and have “good behaviour” not in order to be ‘saved’ but rather, it is an inevitable by-product of one who is ‘saved’ by the grace of God. The story of Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-11) illustrates what it means to be “saved”. He was a chief tax collector described by the people as a “sinner”. The crowd did not deter him from wanting to see who this Jesus was. He ran ahead of them, made a calculated guess as to which route Jesus would likely be taking, climbed up a tree and waited for him. Jesus took that route, spotted him and expressed his desire to stay in his house. Zacchaeus “welcomed him gladly.” No details were given as to what Jesus said or did in Zacchaeus’ house but something dramatic happened in Zacchaeus’ life that led Jesus to declare “Today, salvation has come to this house.” Zacchaeus’ salvation was seen in the dramatic transformation that took place in his sinful life. He stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” This is clear-cut evidence of a sinner who has repented of his sins and was determined to live rightly before Holy God.

It is impossible for any Christian to be sinless this side of heaven but anyone who claims to be a Christian must show evidence of a repentant and transformed life – sinning less with each passing day.
